Job’s mission
As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be a technical leader in the design and development of complex mechanical systems for semiconductor capital equipment. You will architect and integrate high-precision modules – spanning vacuum systems, wafer handling robotics, gas delivery, and thermal assemblies – while mentoring teams and driving innovation across the product lifecycle. This role is ideal for a seasoned engineer with deep technical expertise, a systems-level mindset, and a passion for solving complex, multidisciplinary challenges.
What you will be working on
- Driving reactor development, and optimization of semiconductor processing equipment, with focus on design for oxidation, annealing, curing, atomic layer deposition (ALD), and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques for thin films
- Lead the design and integration of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic subsystems for deposition and thermal processing equipment.
- Architect system-level solutions that balance performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
- Drive design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) principles across the product lifecycle.
- Apply advanced simulation techniques (FEA, CFD, thermal, multiphysics) to validate and optimize designs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (controls, process, electrical, supply chain) to ensure seamless system integration.
- Guide the creation of master BOMs, configuration management, and high-quality documentation.
- Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective actions using structured problem-solving methodologies (8D, 5 Whys, DoE).
- Creating technical innovations, delivering creative solutions, and contributing to ASM’s IP portfolio through invention disclosures and patents
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across global teams.
- Represent ASM in customer escalations, technical reviews, and innovation initiatives.
What we are looking for
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (PhD is also welcome) with at least 8 years of experience in complex mechanical design
- Proven expertise in any of the following:
- Wafer handling systems (robotics, chucks)
- Vacuum and gas delivery systems
- Thermal and structural analysis
- Pneumatic control systems
- Material selection and surface treatments
- Proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., Creo, SolidWorks, Inventor) and simulation tools (ANSYS, COMSOL, etc.).
- Deep understanding of semiconductor manufacturing workflows, process-material interactions, and cleanroom standards.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to lead technical discussions with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience with PLM systems, configuration control, and global product development.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with HALT/HASS, reliability engineering, and cost-of-consumables (CoC) optimization.
- Familiarity with SEM, TEM, FTIR, QCM, and other metrology tools.
- Knowledge of SEMIF47, UL, CE, and other industry standards.
What sets you apart
- Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques or materials science.
- Knowledge of industry-specific standards, regulations, and processes.
- A passion for driving innovation and improving processes.
Apply today to be part of what’s next.
We make the tech that enables the chips in devices which improve lives around the world. We do this with an eye to the future, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible through cutting-edge innovation, and driving the next wave of technological breakthroughs that shape how we live, work, and connect.
