Observability Engineer
Our Engineering Insights team is a dynamic platform team within our Empower Agile Release Train. Our core mission is to develop and maintain a cutting-edge observability platform that provides development teams with a holistic view of their applications’ health, performance, and operational insights.
Beyond core telemetry, we also dedicate a portion of our time to developing our own in-house solution for calculating and publishing key Developer Experience (DevEx) metrics (based on DORA) directly into our observability platform, further empowering teams with actionable insights.
We’re building the foundation for smarter, more efficient energy solutions.
Only together will we take the next step in energy transition. As an Observability Engineer, you’ll be a pivotal expert in:
- Designing & Implementing Observability Pipelines: Crafting scalable and cost-effective data ingestion pipelines for logs, metrics, and traces from diverse AWS accounts into our central New Relic platform.
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC) Development: Developing modular, reusable, and generic OpenTofu (Terraform) modules to automate the deployment of observability infrastructure across our AWS environments.
- Data Processing & Transformation: Building and maintaining data processors, primarily in Python, to transform, filter, and enrich telemetry data for optimal ingestion and analysis, including the calculation of DORA metrics.
- Cross-Account Integrations: Engineering seamless and secure data flows between our feature teams’ AWS accounts and our central monitoring infrastructure.
- Building Reusable Assets: Creating standardized “building blocks” and reusable assets that empower development teams to easily integrate their applications with our observability platform.
- Ensuring Platform Reliability: Maintaining and continuously improving our existing observability infrastructure, focusing on performance, security, and cost efficiency.
- Driving Observability Best Practices: Advocating for and implementing effective monitoring, logging, and tracing strategies across the organization, and documenting our approaches in our developer portal.
We’re looking for collaborative problem-solvers and proactive “doers” who are eager to make an impact. If you’re driven by continuous improvement and have a “you-built-it-you-own-it” mindset, you’ll fit right in. You should recognize yourself in this and the following:
- Excellent command of the English language, both oral and written.
- Proven experience in system design for complex, distributed cloud environments.
- Strong proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) frameworks, particularly OpenTofu/Terraform, for building modular and generic solutions.
- Solid experience in developing data processors and automation scripts in Python.
- In-depth knowledge of data pipelines in AWS, including services like CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry, Kinesis (Firehose/Streams), and Lambda.
- Experience with OpenTelemetry concepts and tools, including the OpenTelemetry Collector, for standardized telemetry collection.
- Experience with GitLab CI/CD pipelines for automated builds and deployments.
- Familiarity with New Relic or similar observability platforms (e.g., Splunk).
- A strong DevOps mentality, embracing ownership and a desire to continuously improve development lifecycles.
- Adaptability to constant change, including new requirements, evolving goals, and emerging technologies.
